Broodmare quality improvement

I have always been on the lookout for quality broodmares.  But as we all know, good ones are very expensive and very difficult to obtain.  That's because everyone else is also on the lookout for quality broodmares... which makes the availability of Promised Land and Memorabilia all the more surprising.

Promised Land was used as a broodmare in 2020, and then was summarily dismissed to Endless Vista.  Memorabilia was sent to Endless Vista with the dissolution of Hopeful Farm, then inexplicably ignored during the EOY Auction.

I was able to pick these two gems up for $100,000 apiece to augment my breeding operation.

It's true that Promised Land, at age 19, has only one season left in the breeding shed.  But I have wanted her for as long as I can remember, so I could not pass up the opportunity to own her, even if it is only for one year.  My plan is to pair her with Nightwing (if I can pry a spot from Smokey) to try to recreate another Daredevil.

Memorabilia, at age 16, has a few productive years left, and will certainly be a mainstay in my band of broodmares until her retirement.

Now, these two newcomers, along with Southern Charm, Enlightenment, House of M, In Spirit, Champions Dream, and Quake, give me a rather spiffy bunch of gals.

Alas... if only Promised Land was just 10 or 12...

"Pry a spot from Smokey"..... Really. The spot is yours if you want it.

haha... that comment was purely facetious Chris. :) I knew that you would give me a spot if I asked. You have always been super generous and I appreciate it! And I certainly will want the spot.

Glad you are getting to improve your broodmares. I can't believe that Memorabilia went through the auction and wasn't purchased.

Well to be honest there were plenty better then Memorabilia in the auction, Great racer but she just has not Produced in the barn and yes Midnight Mass won 1.7 million which is solid, her other 7 combined have won only 1/2 that amount in total.

Not sure if I agree that there were "plenty better" than Memorabilia, but certainly there were some other worthy broodmare candidates that were available.

It's true that other than Midnite Mass, she hasn't produced any other notable offspring yet; but to be fair, the bottom four on the list are virtually unraced.

I think that with her class, she is capable of throwing off a star any time. She'll probably go to War Machine the first time around.

Southern Charm,Southern Belle,Slickfest,Lady Kay,Sharp Slicker,Poker In The Sky.

That's the reason she didn't sell there was an abundance of breeding mares and yes the bottom 3 haven't raced much but the other 6 have and she has gone to some of the best stallions around.

Ive found that most mares will throw at least 1 solid racer, which is more then likely the off-spring taking the sire's Stats or its a case of the Random Factor, will be intrested to see how she fairs in the future.

Southern Charm and Lady Kay were not in the EOY auction. Slickfest is a 19yo who is still at EV. There were a couple that were in her class, but it's still surprising to me that no one made a run at Memorabilia.

As far as her stallions go, I only see 4 matches that make sense to me. War Machine, Take A Gander, Indiscretion, and Mars.

Bellbuster and Perfection are sprinting sires. Memcay and Thunder Arctic are distance sires. Kendane is a mixed bag that I personally would have steered away from. None of those 5 are optimum matches for Memorabilia who is a miler type who may produce miler/classic racers.

Haha... spin it any way you want Steven. You say there was a reason she didn't sell. I say that if anyone had been paying particular attention, she would have sold in a jiffy.

There are less and less players playing now and it seems a lot of people have lost intrest in the game (or quit) or perhaps there stalls were full or maybe they just missed the auction
I know I didn't bother in the auction because the game doesn't interest me anymore like it once did.The competition has gone out of the game (yes u will say it hasn't of course)
I remember when there was a lot of banter and it was very competitive now it's all about peace and love and congratulating everyone how well they did , it's not like it once was (sure u will say it hasn't changed but it has)
I remember when there was huge bidding wars now the auction u are lucky to see anything have more than a few bids
So that's my 2 cents why mares are so cheap now

i generally don't bother with the auction either. I keep my stalls full by breeding or by making in-season purchases on the sales page. Because there are so many horses for sale at the auction, tons of them go unnoticed. I'm pretty sure that if Memorabilia had shown up on the sales page during the season, she would have attracted quite a bit of attention.

The suggestion has been made to eliminate the YE auction altogether and simply conduct all sales during the season. This would solve two problems: 1) shorten the off-season, and 2) make purchase decisions easier to navigate because they would be spread over the whole season rather than having to digest them all at one time during the YE auction.

We have lost a few long-time participants in the past few years and that is regrettable. I really think it is due to the long off-season. I don't blame Laurie for this... it just is what it is. There is a tremendous amount of work involved in running this simulation and I'm sure that not many people could handle it even half as well as Laurie does. That being said, we can make a lot of people happy and perhaps get some new blood and rivalries going if we can streamline the off-season so people don't lose interest.

Can someone name a quality runner produced by a broodmare which was 16 or older? I am just curious, because it seems the best seem to me to be produced before then. Of course my opinion is based on purely random and occasional review of offspring, so I ask the grand poobahs for the real answers. ;-)
